Defense Role

The Defense Role in Overwatch is one that is meant to guard certain areas. Times defense characters are important would be when you are on defense on payload, or control, or capture point game modes. The reason defense characters are good in these game modes is because they excel at taking out or locking down enemies within an area. These characters are better when the enemy has to come to you as opposed to DPS characters who are meant to be going after the enemies. When on defense, not every character on the team should be a defense character, it is usually best to only have two or three. The people who play these characters should usually stay close to the point that they are trying to defend because that's where they are most effective. The characters in Overwatch that fall into the defense category are Bastion, Hanzo, Junkrat, Mei, Torbjorn, and Widowmaker. Of these characters my personal favorites are Widowmaker, Hanzo, and Junkrat. Widowmaker and Hanzo because they are snipers which are usually my specialty, and Junkrat because he does a lot of AOE damage and is good at controlling small rooms and zoning enemies away from areas that you would not want them to be in. As a defense character it may be very tempting to set up in one spot and defend from that spot for most of the match, and to an extent you do want to do this, but you will need to remember to move around and change that position as much as possible. The reason for this is because after being taken out one or two times by a person who is in the same spot, most players will remember that spot and will begin to check for you and come from different angles trying to surprise you and take you out before being spotted. By moving the spot that you sit in occasionally you can avoid this and possibly even catch the enemy peeking out from other angles trying to get a look at the spot you used to be in which gives you a chance to pick them off since they will most likely have tunnel vision by that point. Although they are very fun to use, these character usually get some hate from teammates who see a certain character to be ineffective. It is very important that when learning these characters you ignore this negativity and play them in quick play so that you can not worry about winning or losing, but simply focus on getting the aiming, decision making, and spot picking down without worrying too much about actually winning the game. Once you master these three aspects, wins will follow.
