Support Role

The support role in Overwatch is one that is not generally loved by the players, resulting in it being underplayed, and teams being left without supports. While people who play this role usually don't end up getting a lot of kills, making flashy plays, or pulling in the glory, the support role is actually a very important one because it is the role that provides most of the utility and healing for the team. As a healer you will usually want to be in the backline of your team where you are able to see all of your teammates and keep them all healed up. Most of the DPS characters on the enemy team will be doing everything possible to focus you down and kill you so they can leave your team without heals, making them vulnerable in fights. For this reason you will want to keep an eye out, fight the attackers when you can, and call for help from your team whenever needed because your team will usually realize how important you are in the fight and will do whatever is needed to keep you alive. The heroes that belong to the support category are: Ana, Lucio, Mercy, Symmetra, and Zenyatta. Of these characters my favorites are Ana, Mercy, and Lucio because of their great healing and because of the utility that can be provided through Ana's sleep darts and power up ult, Lucio's speed boost, and Mercy's revive. Something needs to be said about Symmetra when looking at supports. While Symmetra is a good support who specializes in holding choke points and locking down small rooms, she is not a good pick for when your team needs a healer, so if your team does not already have a healer your best bet would be to not play Symmetra. As a healer you should be mainly aiming to keep your tanks alive while they shield you and your DPS characters. The reason for this is that the DPS characters if careful should not be taking much damage because the tank is either blocking it or taking it for them, so if you keep the tanks healed up then everyone should be able to stay alive and continue firing into the enemy team. While it may be tempting to take matters into your own hands and run off fighting the enemy team, it is best to not do this because if you are to get picked off it leaves your team without a healer and vulnerable to enemy advances. If you are going to fight, be sure to continue healing while doing it and stay behind your team to ensure safety for yourself and your team.
